A Girl Scout Troop 2197 Journey Project
Stereotypes about women and girls (in particular women and girls of color) limit not only how the world sees us but how we see ourselves. These stereotypes are promoted largely through media (movies, tv, books, social media, advertisements, etc), so for our fall Journey project, we set out to change the story and create our own media.
First, we took a critical look at the media that’s aimed at us to spot harmful stereotypes– damsels in distress, evil stepmothers, brave princes to the rescue. Then we chose a story and re-imagined it to bust the stereotypes. Now we’re sharing those stories with you and inviting you to be a Stereotype Buster too!
If we all demand better stories – and create our own – with a wider range of role models and heroines, we can expand how the world sees us… and more importantly how we see ourselves.
